Social Stairs at NRC Ballymena

We recently installed a bespoke Social Staircase at the brand-new Northern Regional College (NRC) campus in Ballymena.

As soon as you step through the doors, the staircase stands out as a striking centrepiece of the college’s main entrance - designed not only to connect the floors of the building but also to act as a vibrant social hub for students.

The colourful cushions and open design invite students to relax, gather, and collaborate throughout the day. Whether it’s catching up with friends before class, unwinding during breaks, or taking part in group activities, the staircase has quickly become a central meeting point within the college.

We caught up with Sharon Eatwell, Curriculum Area Manager in Beauty Therapy at NRC, who shared how the space is already enhancing student life:

“One of the most striking features of our new campus are these learning staircases. As soon you come in through thro doors of the new campus its the first thing you see. The stairs are used in a variety of ways. For breakout areas for students, it's lovely when we come in in the morning to see students all gathered on the staircases before they go to class.

 

"It really turns a normal staircase into a social hub, so really the heart of the campus.”

The design also lends itself perfectly to interactive talks and demonstrations. Sharon explained how the Beauty Therapy department recently hosted a Halloween FX makeup demonstration, inviting all students to watch. Because it’s in such a communal open space, it attracts a lot of attention from across the college. It’s very inclusive and helps students feel comfortable and engaged.
