Case Study: Sensory & Soft Play Room at the St Patricks College, Ballymena

Introduction

Creative Activity partnered with St Patrick’s College in Ballymena to design and install a brand-new Sensory Room and Soft Play Room. The project builds on a strong existing relationship, as Creative Activity had previously worked with the school to develop their Specialist Provision classes and supply the required furniture.

Background

We worked closely with Davey Boylan, Head of Specialist Provision, who understands the importance of creating spaces that are uniquely tailored to pupils’ sensory needs. The goal was to ensure every pupil could learn and express themselves in a safe, happy, and supportive environment.

The Challenge

The school wanted to enhance its learning environment for pupils in Specialist Provision, initially considering placing the sensory and soft play rooms in a separate area. However, they needed guidance on how to make these spaces as accessible and effective as possible, while minimising disruption to the pupils’ daily routines.

The Solution

Creative Activity provided expert advice on layout and design, recommending that both the Sensory Room and Soft Play Room be located adjacent to the Specialist Provision classrooms. This close proximity has allowed pupils to transition seamlessly between spaces, increasing usage and reducing disruption. The rooms were fitted with tailored sensory equipment and soft play features to support emotional regulation, focus, and social interaction.

Results

Since installation, the school has seen significant improvements in pupils’ focus, emotional regulation, and social interactions - outcomes that wouldn’t have been possible without these new spaces. The decision to locate the rooms near the Specialist Provision classrooms has proved to be a game-changer, making it easier for staff to integrate sensory and soft play activities into daily learning.
