Case Study: Sensory Room at Ballynahinch PS

See Case Study Video:
Introduction
Ballynahinch Primary School recently partnered with Creative Activity to design and install a new sensory room, creating a dedicated space to support pupils’ social, emotional, and behavioural needs.
Background
Over the last number of years, Ballynahinch Primary School has recognised a growing need to help pupils with self-regulation. Teachers and staff noticed that many children required additional support to manage their emotions and behaviours within the school environment. Previously, Creative Activity had worked with the school to install a sensory circuit in the corridor, which had already proven beneficial for pupils. With the appointment of a new principal, the school began repurposing several spaces, identifying the need for a fully dedicated sensory room as a priority.
Challenges
The school wanted to transform an underused space - a room off the side of the old library into an inviting, functional sensory environment. The challenge was to ensure the design could meet the wide variety of needs among pupils, providing both calming and stimulating experiences depending on individual requirements.
The Solution
Creative Activity worked closely with the school principal and SENCO teacher, Natalie Tate, to design and deliver a sensory room that was both practical and adaptable. The space was carefully planned to provide a safe environment where pupils could self-regulate, reduce stress, and re-engage with learning. Using a range of sensory equipment and resources, the room was tailored to support different children’s needs while remaining flexible for group and one-to-one use.
Results
The sensory room has already received extremely positive feedback from both pupils and staff. Children are visiting the room daily and are benefiting from having a dedicated safe space to regulate and express themselves. Staff have found it to be a valuable tool in supporting emotional wellbeing and behaviour management across the school.
Feedback
“As a school we would definitely recommend Creative Activity. They have got lots of ideas and we have used them twice—both on our sensory walk and on the sensory room. They really know their stuff, they know what to put into rooms, and they have a great range of resources available.”
– Natalie Tate, Senco - St Patrick’s College
Feedback
"The process of working with Creative Activity has been really seamless. They came down, measured the room, recommended the correct equipment, and it was fitted within a few days. It’s been really beneficial, and I would highly recommend working with them in the future—especially for anyone considering a sensory room or identifying a need for one."
– Katie Gardiner, Mental Health Nurse
